Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A handsome, high-quality silver ring featuring a carnelian intaglio depicting Perseus after slaying Medusa. The shank shoulders are embellished with low-relief oak leaves, adding to the ring's decorative appeal. Perseus is shown standing in a relaxed contrapposto pose, his weight on his left leg while his right leg points slightly outward. He faces right, holding the severed head of Medusa. In both Greek and Roman mythology, Perseus is a hero renowned for slaying the Gorgon Medusa and rescuing Andromeda, often symbolizing bravery and resourcefulness.
