Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely carnelian intaglio of a wild boar shown leaping left over a ground line, set in a silver ring. The boar played a relevant role in ancient Greek and Roman culture. It was often associated with its capacity to destroy humans and crops, with boar hunting consequently becoming a popular pastime amongst Romans, considered to be strengthening for the body and mind. The boar was also a recurring motif in myths: hunting down the Erymanthian Boar was Hercules' fourth labor, and the hunt of the Calydonian Boar had made a name for Atalanta's skills. Size of intaglio: 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); of ring: 0.8" W (2 cm); US ring size: 5.5; silver quality: 92.7%; weight: 9.8 grams

Please note that the band of this ring is ovoid. Though it sizes to a US 5.5 on the mandrel, its interior is about 16 millimeters by 19 millimeters.
