Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wearable ring shaped from 37.11% gold that features a hand-carved Roman nicolo intaglio. Incised atop the surface of the nicolo inlay is a primal image of a boar being attacked - rather successfully - by a fierce lion. Lions were symbolic of strength and leadership in the Roman Empire whereas the boar symbolized savagery and uncivilized behaviors. Size (intaglio): 0.38" L x 0.43" W x 0.11" H (1 cm x 1.1 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.54" L x 0.84" W x 0.90" H (1.4 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 37.11% (equivalent to 8K+); weight: 3.8 grams; US ring size: 8.

Provenance: ex-Dr. Corinne Bronfman estate, Washington D.C., USA, acquired via descent; ex-Marjorie Bronfman collection, Montreal, Canada, acquired March 31,1966
