Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A stunning gold ring set with a carnelian intaglio of a bearded man facing left. Fit in a raised, piecrust bezel with an outer lip, the engraved stone may be intended to represent a god or an emperor. The hammered band gently tapers at the side opposite the intaglio. Carnelian stones, which were immensely popular throughout Greco-Roman antiquity, originated from deposits in the Arabian Peninsula and India. Like the Egyptians and the Greeks, the Romans believed that the carnelian stone was endowed with magical powers capable of warding off the evil eye. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.8" W (2.5 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 8.75; gold quality: 90.27% (equivalent to over 21 karats); weight: 8.1 grams
