Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delightful bronze handle in the form of a panther, posed dynamically with his hind legs on a round plinth and its fore paws on the side of a loop as it turns his head to one side, fiercely baring his fangs as the viewer. A collar or leash is tied around his neck, while careful striations adorn his furry coat. In the Classical World, the panther was an animal associated with Bacchus (Dionysos) - the Olympian god of wine, agriculture, pleasure, theater, and reckless abandon. The exotic nature of the panther suited his carefree nature. Size: 3.4" W x 2.7" H (8.6 cm x 6.9 cm); 3.1" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.
