Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A handsome grey schist head of an elite man, probably a prince or noble, with heavy features and copious hair. He has deepset, bulging eyes, a broad nose, and a small mouth nearly obscured by a long, dangling mustache; below that, his beard is neat but fulsome. His wavy hair radiates backward from his head and hands over his remaining ear. The naturalism of the face demonstrates the skill of Gandharan artists, who drew inspiration from the Greek influence of Alexander the Great's central Asian conquests. Size: 4.25" W x 5.5" H (10.8 cm x 14 cm); 7.4" H (18.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Khan family collection, New Jersey, USA, 1980s
