Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous war club that is hand-carved from hardwood exhibiting lustrous russet and dark-brown patina. The dense club features a stocky handle with a lightly bulging pommel, an integral, chevron-form guard with an interior register of stippling brought forth with white pigment, and a paddle-shaped blade with convex faces and a narrow tip. Typical Fijian clubs are carved in much larger sizes with knob-form beating heads, so this club was perhaps a secondary weapon. Size: 14.1" L x 2.8" W (35.8 cm x 7.1 cm); 14.2" H (36.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-William Jamison collection; ex-Niagara Falls Museum, 2004
