Description:

Southern Africa, Zulu, Xhosa, or other Nguni people, ca. late 19th century CE. A well-preserved, striking example of a Nguni shield, made from cow hide, with its distinctive oval form and alternating light and dark hide color. The shield was made to be carried in the left hand, to protect against spears, Khoisan arrows, and in lion and leopard hunts. Boys trained with them from a very young age to make their use second nature. Size: 18.75" W x 31" H (47.6 cm x 78.7 cm)

  • Condition: Wear to the fur on the surface commensurate with age as shown, especially around the peripheries. Rich patina. Modern nail inserted into one pointed end for hanging. Overall in very nice condition. Central pole is lost.
