Description:

Native American, found on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Yupik people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome knapped flint/chert blade attached with thin strips of tied leather to a broad wooden adze handle. This would have been an important tool in the tundra. The wooden handle is probably made from driftwood, as St. Lawrence Island has no native trees aside from the small, brush-like Arctic willow that stands only a foot high. Driftwood was an important, highly valuable resource for people native to the Arctic. This would have been a prized tool. Size: 5" W x 10.95" H (12.7 cm x 27.8 cm); 12.25" H (31.1 cm) on included custom stand.
