Description:

North America, United States, New Hampshire, ca. 1880 to 1890 CE. An antique wood paddle cylinder type of butter churn probably made by the Porter Blanchard Sons Company with an iron crank handle. The wood is painted a pale buttery yellow with black stenciled motifs, a cow, and the faint remains of the Porter name. This was a tabletop churn for use in a domestic kitchen rather than a large-scale dairy farm setting- it can hold several gallons of milk- enough for the average American family. The curved lid indicates this was probably made in the 1880s - the rounded lids were introduced and advertised to improve and prevent color streaking to the butter. Size: 12" L x 14" W x 13.5" H (30.5 cm x 35.6 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
