Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast / Ghana, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A very heavy currency manilla cast from copper in a cuff form, with ridges around its exterior, weighing nearly 7 lbs. (3.17 kg)! The copper purity and size suggest this manilla was made in Africa, rather than exported from Europe for trade. Manillas could be used to trade during significant transactions such as bridal dowries. Size: 5.75" L x 2.75" W (14.6 cm x 7 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
