Description:

Europe, Victorian Period, ca. 19th century CE. A sizable ovoid carnelian intaglio pendant, of red-orange hues with warm vermilion veining throughout, depicting the god Apollo and the torture of Marsyas. Marsyas, a satyr, challenges the god of music Apollo to an instrumental contest where the winner was able to enact any punishment they chose on the loser. This intaglio shows Apollo's victory as Marsyas is tied to a tree where he is to be flayed alive. The intaglio is framed within a gilded copper setting replete with a sloped shoulder decorated with dozens of raised fleur-de-lis. A small, integral loop is situated atop the pendant, and an added loop enables it to be worn as a decorative accessory around one's neck. Size (pendant): 1.7" W x 2.3" H (4.3 cm x 5.8 cm); size (intaglio): 1.625" W x 1.875" H (4.1 cm x 4.8 cm)
