Description:

North America, Southern United States, Civil War era, ca. 1861 to 1865 CE. A large 6.4 lb. (2.9) iron cannonball, hollow with a fuse hole. Interestingly when you look inside there are impressions from grooved bullets - the outlines are very clear- conical bodies with 3 grooves. It is likely that whatever remaining material the ball was packed with solidified to the surface over time- a black pitch known as asphaltum, gunpowder, sawdust, shrapnel such as bullets, grapeshot, nails and other scrap metal. Lethal and deadly, this would have rained down devastation on land or at sea during one of the bloodiest wars fought in United States history. Size: 4.45" Diameter (11.3 cm); weight: 2.9 kg (6.4 lb.)
