Description:

Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775-1851). "The Devil's Bridge" engraving - Drawn in 1840s. Published Oct. 1900 by George Allen Ruskin House, London. A glorious image capturing the aesthetic of the sublime in nature as only Joseph Mallord William Turner could. The awe-inspiring quality of the scene and the smallness of man in comparison to nature is captured by the blasted tree trunk and the rugged rock faces. At the same time, Turner emphasizes humankind's respite by including a dazzling rainbow with rays of hope emerging over St. Gothard Pass. Turner initially crossed this pass in 1802 and later returned in the 1840s. The location made such an impression on the Romantic artist that he featured it in several watercolors and sketches.
