Description:

North/West Africa, Tuareg (also known as Berbers or Tamashek language speakers), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A great example of a straight steel blade with a low ridge down its center, sharpened on both sides, affixed to a handle made of wood wrapped tightly in leather with a curved pommel. It is protected by a leather sheath. Tin bands encircle the guard as well as the upper and lower parts of the sheath. The blade has been incised with a simple triangle and X's motif. This is a takoba, the sword of the warrior caste in the traditionally feudal Tuareg society; because of a cultural aversion among that caste and others to iron, the hilt is always fully covered, as it is here. Size: 1.7" W x 34.5" H (4.3 cm x 87.6 cm)

Provenance: private Glendale, Arizona, USA collection, collected from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Extensive patina on all surfaces. The leather around the handle is slightly peeling and the leather on the sheath and handle both have some small tears but are overall in very nice condition. The steel blade has some areas of oxidation.
