Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States, Alaska / Canada, Tsimshian, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb elk or caribou antler club entirely incised with formline motifs- a bird's head at the burr area before the firsty point / brow tine. This may have been a club - the tradition of club carving may have been passed to the Tsimshian people from northern tribes that hunted caribou, the clubs orginally may have been warfare, however they came to serve as totemic emblems of clan affiliation and were ceremonial objects of authority. Displayed in a modern case. Size of antler: 11" L x 3" W (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm); case: 13" L x 13" W (33 cm x 33 cm)
