Description:

Western Europe, England, London, ca. 19th century CE. A brass nautical octant surveying instrument Troughton & Simms with an ebony handle grip and an antique wood storage case. Troughton & Simms was a British manufacturer founded in 1826, this instrument probably dates from about 1850 until 1915. The center limb is also marked with the serial number "2831." The case is stamped with "U.S." and "P.W." and the instrument is hand scratched with "US," indicated it once belonged to United States Navy personnel. Size of instrument: 10.5" L x 11" W (26.7 cm x 27.9 cm); case: 11" L x 13" W x 5" H (27.9 cm x 33 cm x 12.7 cm)

  • Condition: Missing mirrors / shades / lenses and telescope eye piece. Repair to the verso of the arc- tip is welded in place. Threaded bolts are tight. Not functional. Green oxidation and patina throughout. Etched with "US" on upper part, and clearly marked by maker. Wooden case has scuffs and wear, but intact.
