Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. 19th century CE. A marine mammal bone amulet in the form of a stylized anthropomorphic shaman atop a spirit animal. The animal at the front is a perhaps a sea lion or other totemic mammal to guide and protect the human companion- the spiked headdress is indicative of headdresses shamans wore in ceremonies. The area just below the heads of both figures is cutout, for threading the amulet as a pendant. Shamans wore protective pendants on cords or charms folded into clothing, that were imbued with power from sacred animals and ancestral emblems during healing rituals. The charm would hold and protect the ill person's soul and the animal would guide their spirit through supernatural realms. Size: 7.125" L x 1.25" W (18.1 cm x 3.2 cm)
