Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A fine brass sculpture of the lokapala Vaishravana - one of the Four Heavenly Kings, also known as Kubera or Jambhala - riding a snow lion atop a half lotus throne. Protector of wealth and king of the North, Vaishravana presents a corpulent body adorned in armor as he holds a ceremonial umbrella in one hand and a mongoose in the other. His stern visage is intended to instill fear in the viewer, displaying bulging eyes and a narrowed brow, all surmounted by a scrolling diadem and towering topknot. The underside of his throne is sealed with a large copper plate featuring a double dorje symbol, which conceals a sacred offering. Size: 10" L x 11.75" W x 11.5" H (25.4 cm x 29.8 cm x 29.2 cm)

Provenance: private Loveland, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in 2003; ex-private Las Vegas, Nevada, USA collection
