Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, 19th century CE. A large drum from a Tibetan Buddhist temple, with a hand-carved and painted wooden body. The wooden edges of the drum are decorated with different symbols, among them shells, mandalas, lotus flowers, and fantastic animals. These are intended to give good fortune. Stretched across the drum is a nice leather surface - this instrument still makes a low, booming sound! It was made to be used in religious ceremonies. Size: 23" W x 45" H (58.4 cm x 114.3 cm)
