Description:

Central Asia, Tibet/Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A great example of a dungchen or dung chen, a collapsible trumpet with four sections, the top three of which telescope into the flared base. The majority of the instrument is made of brass sheet, with repousse brass bands at the joints that are highly polished to appear silver in color, around the base, and a long silver mouthpiece with wide rim. A bold red disc of fabric serves as a cushion between the long upper section and the rest. This type of horn is often played in pairs or in even larger groups, with the bell end resting on a special stand. Size: 7.5" W x 69" H (19 cm x 175.3 cm)

See a similar example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (89.4.2563).
