Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. Ten pages of a sutra - ancient texts used in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism; one side of each page features hand written calligraphic texts in black ink on paper with colorful hand-painted depictions of deities, the other only text. The extensively carved wooden book covers are finished in deep red hues and incised with religious entities: the front cover with a central Buddha flanked by dragons, the back cover with four Buddhas surrounded by mandorlas and displaying different mudras. Adding to the spiritual iconography are painted depictions of deities on the inside of the wooden covers. A very special piece.   • Condition: Pages show expected darkening as well as inactive insect holes, creases, and staining. Imagery and script are still fairly vivid. Slight wear to covers. Paintings on interior covers are relatively vivid as well.
