Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A Buddhist shrine and altar box with front opening doors, the gilt copper surface inlaid with turquoise and red carnelian stones, with sterling silver Citipati skulls, and a hook latch closure. Inside is empty, with holes in the copper panel for mounting a statue. The exterior is covered in ornate repoussé decoration; a wrathful deity head above the doors, makara creatures on the doors, the 8 auspicious symbols etched on the sides, and the verso has the Tenfold Powerful One symbol. A simply stunning devotional shrine to direct prayers and present offerings! Size: 9.5" L x 4" W x 12" H (24.1 cm x 10.2 cm x 30.5 cm); gold quality: 15% to 20%; silver quality: 93.28%.
