Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A hinged and lidded 75.45% gold (equivalent to 18K+) and silver-copper alloy storage box that is lavishly adorned with a repousse foliate motif in high relief and etched on the base. The lid opens easily, reveling the careful hammering and embossing work on the interior, and the lid rests flush against the inner lip. The lid depicts 2 couchant deer with a dharma wheel centered above a lotus flower. According to tradition, when Buddha was preaching the dharma sermon, a male and female deer or antelope (krishnasara) came to listen, and ever since they have been a popular Buddhist symbol. This container is perfect for holding trinkets or simply to admire.
