Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful pair of large conch shell trumpets known as a shankha or dung dkar, fitted with gilt brass repousse mounts that are molded over the columella and chamber opening. The spires on both are cut to form a mouthpiece, and one shell has a brass cap over this area as well. The brass is covered in swirls, floral patterns, and sinuous vines that have inlays of turquoise, coral, and carnelian, and one shell is carved with a flower shape that is an emblem of Vishnu. Ritualistic instruments like these were a powerful object in Buddhism and in Hinduism. The sound symbolizes the sacred "om," and it is one of the eight auspicious symbols, called Ashtamangala. Size: 10.5" L x 5" W (26.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
