Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An antique hand-made ceremonial crown known as a ringa, made from thin lacquered wood or thick paperboard painted with golden pigments and portraits of the Five Cosmic Buddhas. The panels are held together by two strips of cotton cloth running around the bottom and the center backside and the piece is professionally mounted in a modern frame under glass. These crowns were worn on top of hats by Buddhist monks during ceremonies or ritual performances, and the panels were sometimes painted by the monk as part of a meditative practice. Size of crown: 20" L x 7" H (50.8 cm x 17.8 cm); frame: 23" L x 17" W (58.4 cm x 43.2 cm)
