Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze bell with an ornate brass handle representing half of a dorje, a ribbed form that is symbolic of lightening or a diamond. Supporting the openwork is a face of a bodhisattva. The sloped shoulder of the bell is adorned with etched Nepalese characters above a register of horizontal dorjes in relief, with petite images of various prayer instruments enclosed within draped banners on the midsection, and a register of vertical, densely-congregated dorjes around the lower periphery. A clapper is still suspended within the bell cavity, and fine patina covers both bell and handle. Size: 3.875" W x 6.875" H (9.8 cm x 17.5 cm)
