Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A cast-brass applique in the form of a highly stylized lion with piercing eyes, an upturned snout, and a gaping, fang-filled mouth bearing a tab-shaped tongue. Raised eyebrows and curling locks of hair forming the mane create an intimidating expression on the animal's face that was perhaps intended to drive away evil spirits. Fine golden-brown patina has formed across the entire applique. Size: 3.5" W x 4.1" H (8.9 cm x 10.4 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection
