Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. This is a textile panel with sewn-on silvered copper plaques, cut from a ritual garment made of heavy, bright red cloth. Some of the copper surface of the plaques has been left strategically unsilvered - here shown as a wonderful light green patina effect highlighting manes and feathers. The plaques have ornate iconography with a central figure of Garuda, the enormous anthropomorphized bird of Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Size of entire panel: 15.4" L x 7.5" W (39.1 cm x 19 cm)

The high quality of the artwork on this piece speaks to the care taken to represent these religious and mythological concepts. At the top of the panel, twin dragons, each on a small triangular plaque, face inward to look at a larger triangular plaque with swirling artwork that can be interpreted as either flames or a lotus blossom. Below that is a plaque with a dragon's face and human hands - perhaps showing a figure wearing a dragon mask. Below that is the triangular plaque of the Garuda, this one also surrounded by twin dragons on smaller triangular plaques looking up at the bird, whose wings are spread, claws and beak gripped around a thin snake. The plaque below that is another dragon with human hands, with an even larger dragon head. Finally, below that, are five small rectangular plaques, one with a cobra, one with a bottle of amrita, one with a repeated flame/lotus motif, one with a wheel, and one with twin fish, all Tibetan Buddhist symbols. A fabulous group of symbolic imagery, well-depicted and detailed!
