Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater depicting a bird - likely a duck, swan, goose, or other waterfowl - rendered with its neck arched and head looking upward, perhaps honking to call its goslings. The form is nicely carved and embellished with incised wings, plumage, tailfeathers, eyes, and beak. A wonderful example, unusual for its avian theme. Size: 29.5" L x 13.625" H (74.9 cm x 34.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired in 2014
