Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure, used as a coconut grater, depicted in the form of an abstract turtle. The figure stands with a striated 'shell' atop a quartet of curved, attenuated legs and has a conical tail protruding from the verso. The bulbous head boasts inlaid nacre (mother of pearl) eyes, a petite nose, a round mouth encircled with an iron ring, and a curved iron grating tool protruding from the mouth with sharpened serrations surrounding the circular grating head. Size: 19" L x 6.75" W x 7" H (48.3 cm x 17.1 cm x 17.8 cm).

  • Condition: One nacre (mother of pearl) eye replaced, and the other with several small fissures. Minor abrasions to body, legs, and head, with softening to some finer details, and slight bending to grating tool. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout.
