Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the shape of a dog lying recumbent atop an integral rectangular plinth. The canine creature bears a dramatically arched back atop a portly abdomen and four slender legs and has a bulbous tail, back-folded ears, and petite black buttons set into the eyes. A curved tool extends from the dog's mouth and has a serrated grating head on top. Size: 20.75" L x 7.25" W x 10.4" H (52.7 cm x 18.4 cm x 26.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-De Roche collection, Piedmont, California, USA, acquired in 1970
