Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. Gorgeous Thai folding manuscript or "Samut Khoi" describing the story of the Buddhist monk Phra Malai who is associated with the afterlife and known for his journeys to both heaven and hell. Comprised of 58 pairs of palm leaves decorated on both sides with 20 pairs of illustrations and 40 individual images. Phra Malai folding manuscripts such as this are often made to be donated to Buddhist monasteries. A translated dedication is written on the end leaf as follows: "This Malai was published by donation from Mr. Rord and Mrs. Saeng to worship Phra-Sri-Ariya-Mettrai [the future Buddha] and with this donation they wished to achieve the Nip-parn [Nirvana]." Size: 27"L x 5-1/2"W x 3-1/2"H when folded; approximately 44' long when unfolded.
