Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a hollow cast gilded bronze depiction of the Buddha seated atop a multi-tiered throne that is designed to look like a piece of furniture, complete with tiny feet. Buddha is depicted with a round face and serene features, with large, closed eyes and a prominent nose and mouth. He has a tall ushnisha, signaling his enlightened status. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth when he was Prince Siddhartha - they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. His hands are positioned in the Bhumisparsa or 'earth witness' mudra, and he is seated in half lotus position. This sculpture is a quintessential example of the Rattanakosin style with its flame-like motif emerging from the ushnisha. Size: 4.5" L x 8" W x 12" H (11.4 cm x 20.3 cm x 30.5 cm)
This mudra comes from the story of the Buddha asking Prthivi, the spirit of the earth, to witness the moment of his enlightenment when he was threatened by the king demon, Mara. The pose represents Buddha's victory over temptation, as well as the internal strength and commitment to enlightenment that the Buddha had.
