Description:

Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. This large figure was a decorative finial from an early 19th century Thai temple compound where this bird would have been a popular motif. The bird itself stands on an octagonal plinth with its colored glass inlaid wings outstretched and its tail and head held high. Its very lavish and ornate decoration is very typical of art from the Rattanakosin and Bangkok periods. This is very large for its type and retains much of its original lacquer. Size: 20-1/4"H (51 cm).
