Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning Bangkok Style (Rattanakosin) gilt brass Buddha seated in half lotus position, atop a three-tiered, flame spiked throne with front canopy, with his hands forming the earth witness mudra. The Buddha presents with a tranquil visage and characteristically long ears to represent the wealth of his previous life as Prince Gautama, as they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. In this example, he is shown after his enlightenment, as is evidenced by his large ushnisha, the pointed projection from the top of his head that symbolizes his newfound knowledge. This glimmering ornate style of Buddhist sculpture is a quintessential example of the Rattanakosin style Buddha with its sharp pointed spire (rakshmi) atop the head, flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robe with a floral design, elaborately decorated pedestal, and of course the brilliant gilding! Size: 8.2" W x 12.625" H (20.8 cm x 32.1 cm)
