Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fabulous and glimmering gilt brass depiction of the Buddha seated in full lotus position with his hands forming the samadhi or dhyana meditation mudra atop a three-tiered pedestal. He wears an elaborately textured robe with low relief floral motifs across the drapery. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth in his previous life, stretched from wearing large earrings. Here he is shown after his enlightenment, as evidenced by his large ushnisha - the pointed projection from the top of his head that symbolizes his newfound knowledge - and the spiked flame shape rising from tight nodules of hair is a quintessential example of the Rattanakosin style. The verso has two integral rings for securing this precious statue when displayed in a public place, and the hollow base is filled with a brick material. Size: 10.5" L x 7" W x 13.75" H (26.7 cm x 17.8 cm x 34.9 cm)

This Buddha possesses the classic elements of Thai artwork from this period when the region was ruled by one of the most powerful kingdoms in its history. The Rattanakosin style is considered the continuation of the Ayutthaya style that rose after the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. Wood became less important than it was in the Ayutthaya period, and gilded brass or bronze became the materials of choice.
