Description:

Thailand, Ratanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fine example of a hollow cast gilded bronze depiction of the Prince Siddhartha prior to his enlightenment seated atop a multi-tiered throne that bears a standard with a playful monkey in profile. Shiny black lacquer remains. Siddhartha is depicted with a round face and serene features, with large eyes and a small mouth, but no ushnisha or rashmi, signaling his unenlightened status. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth - they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. His hands are positioned in the Bhumisparsa or 'earth witness' mudra, and he is seated in half lotus position. This sculpture is a quintessential example of the Ratanakosin style with its flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robe with a floral design, and elaborately decorated pedestal. Size: 3" L x 4.8" W x 6.5" H (7.6 cm x 12.2 cm x 16.5 cm)
