Description:

Southeast Asia, Northern Thailand, Lanna, ca. 19th century CE. A fine hand carved wooden Lanna style Buddha, seated in half lotus position, with hands in the Bhumisparsa or Subduing Mara / Earth Witness mudra, atop a thick pedestal. Faint text incised on the surface wrapping around the pedestal from front to back, 2-3 rows on all sides-perhaps a dedication or prayer. The surface is painted in a golden hue with a red triangular motif on the front of the pedestal. Size: 4" L x 2.25" W x 8.75" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 22.2 cm)

According to the consignor, this piece was previously owned by the Portland Art Museum, Oregon.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
