Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful and serene buddha head, skillfully hand-carved from a single piece of wood, wrapped in very thin layer of iron, and adorned with a lustrous, high-quality gilding of 72% gold (equivalent to over 17 karats), along with gold pigment. The visage exudes a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility, with downcast eyes, arched brows, a naturalistic nose, full lips, and stretched earlobes symbolizing Buddha's all-hearing powers, benevolence, and wisdom. Atop the head is Buddha's distinctive curled coiffure with a prominent, pointed "flaming" ushnisha. A gorgeous band of circular glass inlays boasting verdant hues of green adorns the hairline. Size: 4.75" W x 9" H (12.1 cm x 22.9 cm); 10.625" H (27 cm) on included custom stand; quality of gilding: 72% (equivalent to over 17 karats)
