Originally offered at $300...

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of an energetic puppy, standing at attention as if begging for a treat. His slender body leans forward; his head is raised with perky ears and wide-open eyes made of inlaid marbleized glass, and his long tail extends outward. An iron grating tool is attached over his head and emerges outward as if representing his tongue. A very unusual and endearing canine coconut grater! Size: 23.375" L x 11.125" W x 12.625" H (59.4 cm x 28.3 cm x 32.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-De Roche collection, Piedmont, California, USA, acquired in 1970

  • Condition: Some old nicks and abraded areas, but the piece is carved from burled wood, so most of those wonderful nooks and crannies are inherent to the wood. Normal surface wear commensurate with age. Iron grater has developed a nice warm patina.
