Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. Sensitive example of a Buddha head cast from brass. Surmounted by an elaborate tiara and bulbous top gun, the tranquil visage gazes downward, displaying slender eyes beneath dramatically arched brows, a graceful nasal bridge, broad nostrils, and fleshy lips held in a gentle smile. A rhomboid urna embellishes his forehead, and sizable ears sit on either side of the face, featuring elongated earlobes that represent Buddha's spirituality. Size: 2.6" W x 4.9" H (6.6 cm x 12.4 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-William G. Butler estate, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s; ex-Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York City, New York, USA, 1970s
