Description:

Oceania, French Polynesia, Tahiti, Society Islands, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A lovely cylindrical drum, hand-carved from a single piece of caramel-hued hard wood, with flattened ends and a smooth exterior surface, and a shallow diagonal groove on each upper edge. The drum has a lengthwise opening carved into the top which enables the projection of sound when struck with wooden mallets. The drum is meant to be played while sitting in an open trestle frame. Size: 27.75" L x 6.75" H (70.5 cm x 17.1 cm); 11.7" H (29.7 cm) on included custom stand.
