North America, Southwest, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A well preserved bull or bison skull that has been hand-painted with a bright sun motif delineated in golden yellow with a red outline against a turquoise-hued ground on the upper section of the skull, this composition underscored by red, white, and aqua curvilinear, horizontal striations - and below this, the snout is embellished with vertically oriented aqua-hued curvilinear motifs. The horns retain most of the exterior sheath, and a metal wire hook is attached to the verso for suspension. Size: 11.75" L x 27.5" W x 29" H (29.8 cm x 69.8 cm x 73.7 cm)

  • Condition: Losses and fissures to teeth as shown. Sheaths covering horns fit nicely and are well preserved save minor losses to bases of the sheaths, but can be pulled off the bone beneath. Some losses to peripheries of skull. Most of the fissures to the skull are likely natural to the form. Signs of weathering with natural ossification of bone and natural mineral deposits across the surface. Painted decoration shows slight fading but is still discernible.
