Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malay Peninsula, Sumbawa Island, Pangulu style, ca. 1880 CE. A Pangulu-style hilt made from a medium brown hard wood in the form of a bird's head. The word "Penghulu" means "village headman" or "Moslem leader." This kris handle may have its originations in either Malaysia or Sumatra, as the Bugi have had significant artistic and political influence in both areas. Expertly carved in the form referred to as a pistol hilt or kerda yet resembling a bird. Superb example! 2.5'H x 3"W + custom stand.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of the late Ami Brown, foremost Israeli art collector and founder of Coca Cola Israel.
