Southeast Asia, Indonesia, North Sumatra, Batak peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hammered steel short sword known as a Piso Halasan (also Piso Eccat, Ekkat, or Engkat) with a sharp, single-edged blade that curves and tapers to a point. The slender brass handle depicts a stylized crouching figure with a flat-top hat. The painted wooden sheath is topped with a brass cap bearing a pair of stylized anthropomorphic faces as well as a belt loop and capped on the bottom with two stylized figures. Size (w/ sheath): 8.5" W x 25.75" H (21.6 cm x 65.4 cm); (blade): 15.625" L (39.7 cm)
