Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

Southeast Asia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), ca. 19th century CE. A fine basket made from ebony wood, bovine bone, and porcupine quills! The basket is comprised of a rectangular wooden base with small disc feet. The surface is inlaid with dozens of circular bone (bovine or ungulate) pieces in white and brown. The vertical creamy brown bars are made from thick quills, likely from the Malayan porcupine species, and support the wooden rim. The rim is also inlaid with circular bone patterning. This is a stunning piece of artistry from a surprisingly strong material; after all, quills are only modified hair! Boxes and baskets of quill and wood were often made for trading with Europe; Sri Lanka at this time was the British colony Ceylon. This exquisite basket may have served a letter box or paper holder for a British patron. The artistry of this unique piece is impressive! Size: 10.125" L x 7.25" W x 4" H (25.7 cm x 18.4 cm x 10.2 cm)
