Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), ca. 19th century. Lovely gold-tone hairpin set with mine-cut diamonds and fully faceted rubies. Long horseshoe shaped jewelry with double pins, upper section set with 25 small rubies and 14 diamonds. On the back of the pin is a looped bale possibly added later so that this lovely pin can be worn as a pendant. Metal tests at mostly copper with about 8% gold and similar level of silver. Every high status Sri Lankan lady of the 19th century would have owned such an impressive piece of jewelry! Weighs 14.7 grams. Size: 4.5" L x 1.125" W (11.4 cm x 2.9 cm)
