Description:

Western Europe, Spain / Latin America, ca. 19th century CE. An antique coco chocolatero, a coconut shell vessel hand carved and outfitted with a high quality silver (87.2% to 93.3%) base, handles, and rim. These were made in Latin America, largely during the period of the Kingdom of New Spain, and brought to Europe as curiosities - workshops in Europe also made similar vessels. These coconut cups popularized cacao bean beverages - the additions of sugar and dairy transformed the drink into the luxurious hot chocolate / cocoa that we are familiar with today! The underside of the foot has 3 stamped hallmarks which are faint and nearly indiscernible. Size: 4" Diameter (10.2 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
