Description:

New World, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 19th century CE. A striking retablo depicting a skillfully rendered visage of Christ on Veronica's veil, finely painted on heavy gauge tin and set in a beautiful frame that is embellished with an elaborate decorative program. Christ's head is shown disembodied, wearing the crown of thorns and presenting an emotive expression with thoughtful eyes and well-defined features. The story of Veronica's Veil (also known as the Sudarium) comes from Saint Veronica's encounter with Jesus on the Via Dolorosa. She used her veil to wipe the blood and sweat from His face and His image was imprinted onto the cloth. This story gained popularity in the Middle Ages and continues to be an important part of the story of Christ's final hours in the Catholic tradition. An impressive retablo, sensitively painted and set in a dazzling frame that complements it perfectly. Size (sight view): 13.1" L x 9.4" W (33.3 cm x 23.9 cm) Size (frame): 19.75" L x 16.125" W (50.2 cm x 41 cm)
